Keith Johnson

Keith is a retired attorney who has over 35 years of experience working with public pension funds and other institutional investors. He headed the Institutional Investor Legal Services Group at Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c. (Reinhart Law), representing investors on fiduciary, investment, securities litigation, and governance matters. Keith previously served as investment legal counsel at the ninth largest public pension fund in the US. He was also program director for the Wisconsin International Corporate Governance Initiative as well as President of the National Association of Public Pension Funds and an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin Law School. Keith and the Reinhart Law team have worked on numerous Funston Advisory Services public retirement system assignments.

Keith is a frequent presenter on fiduciary and investment topics at top pension fund, legal, and investor conferences and webinars in the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia as well as a published author on investor-related topics. He is a Board Smart faculty member.

With more than three decades of experience representing pension funds, including service as Chief Legal Counsel at the State of Wisconsin Investment Board, Keith has a unique perspective that enables him to better understand investor needs and circumstances. He sees the bigger picture and helps investors resolve issues and meet their goals.

Keith recently helped write two books that provide guidance to pension plans. He co-authored "The Prudent Fiduciary" chapter entitled “One of a Kind: A Practical Guide for 21st Century Public Pension Trustees” (March 2017). The book . . . "provides practical advice about the governance challenges faced by 21st-century public pensions and is a 'must read' for all fiduciaries and those interested in or affected by the governance of public pension systems." Keith was also co-editor of the Cambridge University Handbook of Institutional Investment and Fiduciary Duty, Cambridge University Press (May 2014). This book is . . . "a comprehensive reference work exploring recent changes and future trends in the principles that govern institutional investors and fiduciaries."

Keith earned his JD from the University of Wisconsin Law School and his BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also holds a Level 1 Credential from the Sustainable Accounting Standards Board.
